VISITOR (The Square) PDF Print E-mail

A solo exhibition in two parts by Liza Grobler
iArt Gallery: a project space for contemporary art
12 March - 3 April  2010

We get many visitors and some of them make a more lasting impression than others. Sometimes visits are a pleasurable experience, sometimes not, but every interaction has a butterfly effect. Even the visitors we like sometimes overstay their welcome. And then there are those unexpected guests that show up on your doorstep or in your head at the most unlikely of times…

What kind of visitor are you and where do you feel at ease?
Visitor at Irma Stern Museum (Rondebosch) has moved on to new lodgings at Wembley Square (Cape Town): From Suburban living to Lifestyle Centre…And although the exhibition has morphed from homely and soft into a new (square) shape, it still promise a few unsettling moments with a selection two- and three-dimensional mixed media apparitions. The work is infiltrating both iArt Gallery spaces, with the opening and core at iArt Gallery: A Project Space for Contemporary Art as well as a guest appearance at iArt Gallery (71 Loop Street). This Visitor is in dialogue with herself, but if you’d like to add your penny’s worth, please pop in at either (or both) of the venues.

You are cordially invited!

Visitor opens at the Irma Stern Museum (Rondebosch, Cape Town) 11 am on 3 October 2009.
This solo exhibition includes work in a wide range of media and is structured around visits from friends and acquaintances. Over 20 local and international artists are involved in various projects and collaborations.

October 2009

The UCT Irma Stern Museum, or The Firs as she fondly called it, was the house of one of South Africa’s most renowned artists: Irma Stern. Here she lived, created and entertained. According to letters and anecdotes she was an inspiring and fiery character, but also a very tiring and demanding guest when she visited other homes!

Visitor opened on 3 October 2009. We celebrate Stern’s birthday (2 October) and her artistic output, but this is also a deliberate invasion of her home through continuous activity: I will host events, collaborate with colleagues and entertain in the lush garden of this museum-home… I too, shall overstay my welcome…

My first solo exhibition was at the Chelsea Gallery in 1999 - a stately old home in Wynberg. One decade later, the “homely” atmosphere of the Irma Stern Museum forms a natural sequel to the second decade of art making. Visitor is an exhibition that engages with the organic nature of this public (private) space.

Art making is a social practice: “Exhibition” implies “viewer”. I crowd sourced by inviting collaborators/guests/artists/friends. Somehow everyone’s involved… The exhibition will change daily: Objects, sounds, friends and acquaintances will occupy the space until the 24th of October. We celebrate human interaction and the slightly absurd tendency of life to connect a seemingly random list of events.

Hope to see you!
Ps. the collaborations…

Other collaborations:

My first solo exhibition was opened by artist Lien Botha in 1999. It was therefore very exciting to collaborate with Lien. One image from this photo shoot has been transformed into a large beaded panel (beaded by Qalo Beading Studio) for Visitor and another forms part of Lien’s exhibition Parrot Jungle (also in October: The Photographers’ Gallery, Shortmarket Street).
Singer Monika Voysey merges (quite literally) with a knitted sculpture (3 and 10 October, 11h00-12h00)
Life drawing session (closed event): Monday 5 October
Participating artists are: Johann Louw, Clare Menck, John Murray, Nomthunzi Mashalaba, Wonder Marthinus, Norman O’Flynn, Conrad Botes, Marna Hattingh & Marlise Keith.

The closing event on Saturday 24 October (11h00) is a collaborative lace making performance with Pierre Fouché and a picnic in the garden (bring your own picnic basket)

Your current web browser must be updated to version 7 of Internet Explorer (IE7) to take advantage of all of template's capabilities.

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
